Mike Mignola at Long Beach Comic and Horror Con 2012

Mike Mignola, award-winning comic book artist and creator of Hellboy, B.P.R.D., and The Amazing Screw-On Head was another special guest at this years Long Beach Comic and Horror Con.

Hellboy is one of my favorite graphic novel series and Mignola’s style and illustrative technique has always been an inspiration in my own art.

I try to meet him every year at the various comic cons I go to and always pick up a new “sketchbook” of his work and pinups which he usually creates just for these shows.

I picked up his latest autographed sketchbook at the San Diego Comic Con (more blogs on his other autographs and sketches coming soon), and have most of the Hellboy graphic novels in my collection.

This time I brought my 1993 Topps Star Wars Galaxy New Visions Series 1 trading card featuring Mike Mignola’s personal take on a Tusken Raider.

There usually is a long line of fans, especially at the San Diego Comic-Con, waiting for to talk to him and get books autographed. Especially after the release of the live action and animated movies Hellboy (2004), Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms (2006), Hellboy Animated: Blood and Iron (2007), Hellboy Animated: The Iron Shoes (2007), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). Sometimes I don’t have a chance to meet him because the lines are too long or are ticketed.

This time there were hardly any lines, and I quickly came up to his table (in an area corded off for long lines). He quickly autographed the trading card, and showed me some of his new graphic novels. Now there were some people behind me, so I thanked him for signing the card and he thanked me for stopping by.

Mike Mignola also has done cover art for a number of comic books, including Action Comics, Aliens vs. Predator, Alpha Flight, Aquaman, Batgirl, Batman, Conan, Daredevil, Deadman, Detective Comics, Incredible Hulk, Lobo, New Mutants, Rocket Racoon, The Spectre, Starman, X-Men Classic, and Zorro.

He also works in film and animation as an illustrator for Dracula (1992), production designer for Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), concept artist for Blade II (2002), as a conceptual designer on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), and more.
